53. $200
Unknown maker cigar box clock, ca. 1850? This small (11.75-inch tall) box clock features a full-length glass in the door with a decalcomania pattern typical of “cigar box
clocks” from the New England Clock Co. (see #54). The green background is very dark and may have been strengthened; the glass
is broken horizontally in the middle but glued. The curved door frame is veneered in mahogany or rosewood, but the sides and
top are not veneered; the sides appear to be solid walnut. The metal dial is slightly contoured with old/original paint, the
hands are period. The 30-hour, time-only movement is unusual and unsigned; I don’t recognize it and so cannot guess who made
this clock. There is no label. The clock is running nicely. If you have any ideas as to a maker, please let me know. $200–$500.
Thanks to Bill Iles for cluing me in to the photos and description of a very similar example on page 38 of Gregory &
King, The Clocks of Irenus Atkins, making this an M.W. Atkins & Co. clock. The unusual movement is shown on page 40. Mystery solved, thanks Bill!
