Silas B. Terry 30-hour round-sided
shelf clock, ca. 1842. A 22.5-inch case with unusual double-rounded sides, veneered in a light mahogany with a clean
finish. The case is thin, just 3 inches deep, making it a bit unstable when the 2-lb weights are at the top. Of
course, everything SB Terry did had some unusual element to it; this clock has a tombstone-shaped solid plate movement with the winding
arbors on either side of the center post. The dial glass is original, while the lower glass is a period replacement with
an image painted by Lee Davis. The original paper dial is in excellent condition; note the “Terry’s Ville Conn’t” location. The
hands are period and appropriate. The unsigned 30-hour brass movement is running and striking on a wire gong, driven by
two 2-lb weights, 3.75 inches tall, 2 inches wide at base, and 1.5 inches thick, which may be the original weights; because the clock
is thin, regular 30-hour weights will not fit. The backboard is papered but there is no label. AAC sold a
similar example a year ago for $350. $250-$350.
