Bishop & Bradley carved column & splat, 1824-1832. There
are no similar B&B clocks listed on LiveAuctioneers; they made almost exclusively pillar & scroll wooden works clocks and,
later, Salem Bridge brass movement clocks. That said, AAC sold a similar example last summer, so there are at least two
examples of this style. The 31-inch case has deeply carved half-columns and splat with wooden urns as finials. The finish
is thick and crusty; it sits on carved paw feet in front and elaborately turned feet in back. The door latch was removed long
ago and veneered over, it is not noticeable, and a handle replaces the latch and escutcheon. Both glasses are original, with
the original putty. The tablet is original as well and has been retouched and rebacked. Very nice. The wooden dial
retains the gilded gesso ornamentations in the spandrels and the numbering is strong, but it is darkened with soiling; a professional
cleaning would make a big difference. There are number of repair notations on the back. The 30-hour time-and-strike wooden
movement is clean and without obvious repairs; I can get it to run for a minute or two, and it will strike. There are two 3
lb square weights. There is a great orange label inside, very well preserved. This clock is as original as they get and
you gotta like that. The one AAC sold last summer went for $314 and it had a repainted tablet. $250–$350.
