Brewster & Ingrahams sharp gothic (steeple)
with Kirk’s backplate, 1843-1846. This is a rare example of Kirk’s cast iron backplate and lyre gong base in a B&I
steeple, more commonly seen in round gothics (beehives). You can see several near-identical examples in Ly’s book on Ingraham
clocks on pages 49-50. The 20-inch case has an old finish with patina, the veneer is flawless, the cone finials good (a
slight loss to the right finial tip), and an original dial glass with the original putty; the lower frosted glass is appropriate but
modern. The contoured dial was repainted by The Dial House with the maker stamp at the bottom of the dial, and the hands are
original. The 8-day repeating brass movement is clean and running, but the strike chain is hung up and will need attention. The flat brass pendulum hanger is original and often lost from these clocks. The movement was made by E.C. Brewster & Co.,
the business that preceded B&I. There is a green label inside. AAC sold a similar example last summer for $350. $250–$500.
