65. $350
Brewster & Ingrahams sharp gothic (steeple) with Kirk’s
backplate, 1843-1846. This is a rare example of one of B&I’s steeples with the early Kirk’s cast iron backplate and lyre
gong base. You can see several near-identical examples in Ly’s book on Ingraham clocks on pages 49-50. The 20-inch case
is veneered in flame mahogany on the front and plain mahogany on the sides and has a clean finish. Both glasses are likely original,
with the typical cut-glass tablet. The painted dial holds the original paint with chipping and wear; note the stamped signature
at the bottom of the dial. The hands are likely original. The 8-day brass movement with a rack and snail repeating strike
is mounted on a cast iron base with the brass springs enclosed in cast iron cups. The click stops are weak and it is difficult
to wind; I cannot get it running but it will strike. There is a good green label inside behind plastic. These clocks are
uncommon and especially so with the large lyre base for the gong. $350–$700.
