217. $350
Brewster Manufacturing Co. gilded scroll-front,
1852-1854. A 17-inch black wooden case with gilding and painted flowers around the scrolled borders, as well as the door
frame. The gilding and colors are strong. The upper glass is original with good retention of dial surround,
and the cut and frosted lower glass is period if not original. The metal dial is clean with little chipping of the original
paint, faded flowers in the corners, and a very faint signature below the mainstem. The hands are period and proper. The
ribbed 8-day, time-and-strike brass movement is signed “Brewster & Ingrahams” and is running nicely, striking on a wire gong. There
is a dark and tattered yellow label inside. This clock was made after Brewster & Ingrahams broke up over exporting clocks
to England, and Brewster continued as the BMC. AAC sold a similar example a year ago for $454. $350–$500.
