274. $500
Scottish tall case by G. Hill, Balfron, Scotland, ca. 1880. I
cannot find information on G. Hill, but Balfron is north of Glasgow. The case is 80 inches tall and has no finials or crest,
and never did. The veneer appears to be walnut (possibly, mahogany) with blond string inlays, a birdseye maple band across the
top of the trunk, figured mahogany or walnut on the trunk door and base, with fine marquetry around the trunk door and base. Note the inlaid bird on a vase in the middle of the door. It has simple French bracket feet and a simple apron; the right-front
foot has been repaired. The finish is clean and polished. The hood glass is old and held in place by the original putty;
the iron dial has been repainted and the hands replaced, I assume. The 8-day brass time-and-strike movement is unsigned but
has been cleaned and serviced; it is running and striking on an overhead bell as expected, regulated by a metal pendulum with a beautiful
painted bob, driven by two large cast iron weights. This is a well-maintained tall case clock with a beautiful finish, no damage
or significant wear, and running strongly. Delivery to the eastern half of the US for $400. $500–$1000.
