216.         $100

E.N. Welch Mfg. Co. “Colby Wringer”, ca. 1883.  This clock was made for the Colby Wringer Company which made washing machines; they probably gave these clocks to their sales agents for good performance. Colby Wringer was in Vermont.  The black walnut case is 24 inches long with an old finish and some patina.  The door glass is original, held in place with the original putty, and a good gold stencil.  The painted dial is also likely original, with some fading, craquelure, and strengthening of some numbers.  The hands are likely original.  The signed 8-day, time and half-hour strike movement is running and striking on a wire gong, and there is an untested alarm hooked up.  The pendulum is specific to this model and has Colby Wringer imprinted on the sandwich-glass bob.  There are some worn labels on the back. They also made this model in a shelf version – see #111.  AAC sold a Colby Wringer last February for $477; this is a nicer example. $100–$500.
