E.C. Brewster & Co. early round gothic (beehive), ca.1840. This
is a rare and early round gothic that uses Kirk’s patent repeating, rack-and-snail strike movement, with brass springs enclosed in
cast iron barrels and mounted on a cast iron backplate. For details see Ly, American Clocks, Vol. 3, page 30.
The 20-inch case has an old and worn finish and sits all modern ball feet. The veneer is intact but needs some rejuvenation. Both glasses are old, possibly original, the tablet frosted cut glass. The painted metal dial is unusual, with “Time Flies”
and a starburst; also note the quarter-hour markers on the chapter ring. The hands are unusual but possibly original. There was some kind of emblem above the dial as well. The 8-day, time-and-strike repeater movement is signed in script across
the bottom crossbar, also something I have not seen before (see photo); it is running like a champ and striking on the hour. There is a lyre gong mount (the screw holding the wire gong in place is loose) and unusual star wallpaper on the backboard, along
with a card label. The card label is also found on the back of the case. AAC sold a less fancy example of this model a
year ago for $750. $700–$900.
