Atkins, Whiting
& Co. “Parlor No. 1”, 1850-1858. An 18-inch case veneered in rosewood with a minimal finish. Both glasses are old
but the lower glass may not be original; this model usually has a clear glass or a mirror in the lower door. The contoured dial
has old paint and period hands, with a repair to the minute hand. The round 30-day, time-only movement was made by Atkins and
is driven by an Ives wagon-spring; it is running without issue. There is no label and rarely is. A hard model to find;
only one on LiveAuctioneers, selling at Fontaine’s last fall for $800 – a big come-down from the prices AAC obtained in 2020 and 2021,
with an average of $1864. The one at Fontaine’s had a badly flaking dial. $800–$1500.
