Chauncey Goodrich
cottage, ca. 1853. A second example of this unusual style of cottage clock with glass sides – this one with clear glass rather
than mirrors on the lower halves. The 12.5-inch-tall case is veneered in mahogany, again with concave sides; the finish
is a bit rough. All glasses are old/original, with the lower side glasses both cracked. The reverse-painted dial surround
is the original gilt filagree with no backing, while the tablet of the “President’s House” must be a replacement, as it is practically
perfect. The dial has been repainted and antiqued, the hands are period. The 30-hour time-and-strike movement is running
and striking on an iron bell; there is an alarm as well, untested. There is a good label on the backwall. A second nice
example of this uncommon cottage clock. $275-$500.
