49.                   $275

Chauncey Goodrich cottage, ca. 1853.  Chauncey was associated with John Birge in his early years, J.C. Brown later, and formed a partnership with Samuel Smith in 1849.  In 1852 he was on his own before eventually becoming a US Senator from Connecticut.  The 12.75-inch case is veneered in mahogany or possibly rosewood, with the front and side vertical surfaces concave and the door frame flat. There are six glasses, the lower two side glasses mirrored and all glasses period/original.  The original tablet shows an open Bible with the petition “Give us this day our daily bread”; the upper glass has been repainted, not quite professionally, to match the tablet.  The metal dial has been repainted and antiqued, the hands are proper, and the unsigned 30-hour time-and-strike movement is running and striking like a champ.   There is an embossed pendulum and a very good label on the backwall.  I’m liking this clock a lot.  $275–$500.
