Antique American Clocks July 2021
49. $400
LF & WW Carter “Carter Calendar Clock”, 1862-1868. A 26.5-inch rosewood case with
a 9-inch time dial and a 5-inch calendar dial. The rosewood veneer looks great, but the grain-painting that was used on the
wooden bezels is worn off, as is usually the case. It appears that both glasses have been replaced and the upper dial repainted
by The Dial House. The calendar dial is paper. The hands are correct. The 8-day, time-only movement is correct and as
shown in Ly, Calendar Clocks, p. 40. The calendar mechanism on the lower door was patented by B.B. Lewis and licensed to Elias
Burwell, as indicated on the label. He also provided calendar mechanisms to Welch, Spring & Co. The clock is running
and the calendar hands are advancing. This is the least common (and smallest) of the Carter calendar wall clocks; Horton’s last
sold one in 2017 for $815. $400-$600.
