Antique American Clocks July 2021
45. $1500
Birge & Fuller miniature candlestick wagon spring steeple, 1844-1848. This is a smaller, 30-hour version of the more common 8-day wagon spring made by this company. The mahogany case is 21.5 inches
tall; the dial glass and lower cut glass are replacements, the middle cut glass may be period. The dial has been repainted and
varnished, the hands are modern, correct replacements. The label is also a photocopied replacement. The 30-hour time-and-strike
movement, signed “C. Boardman, Bristol CO” is correct for this model. The crutch is loose at the anchor and so the clock will
not run; the strike train also needs adjustment. The wagon spring retains the original chains and will wind. Two similar
examples on LiveAuctioneers, selling for $1700 (Schmidt’s Antiques) and $1900 (Schmitt-Horan) in 2019 and 2020, respectively. $1500-$1800.
