Antique American Clocks July 2021
29. $2500
Southern Calendar Clock Co. “Fashion No. 8”, ca. 1887. One of the last Fashion models,
produced by Seth Thomas after they bought out SCCC. The case is fabulous here with a fine furniture finish – best finish on
any clock is this group. The finials are modern replacements. The door glass is wavy, the Fashion lettering correct (6.5
inches long, 3.25 inches tall). Both dials were painted by The Dial House on replacement dial pans; there are old Seth Thomas
Fashion hands. The 8-day time-and-strike movement is running and striking on the cathedral gong, the calendar is advancing. No label, not uncommon. The details that distinguish the No. 8 from earlier models, and in particular the No. 5, are the paired
rosettes on the calendar door, and the shift of the inner door handle away from the outer door frame, eliminating the need to cut
out part of that door frame to accommodate the handle. Given the proclivity for Seth Thomas Fashion dial pans to corrode, the
replacement dial pans used here are reasonable restorations that preserve the appearance and function of this rare clock. This
is the nicest example of this model I have seen. AAC sold one last summer for $2750. $2500-$3500.
