Antique American Clocks July 2021
25. $500
Southern Calendar Clock Co. “Fashion No. 4”, ca. 1878. The Fashion No. 4 uses the same
case as the No. 3 and the same Seth Thomas 8-day time-and-strike movement (type 85, updated slightly from the No. 3). The pendulum
hanger was simplified and the bob is now mounted on a short wooden stick to better compensate for temperature changes. The Fashion
lettering on the door remains the same, as do the labels, dial boards and round bezels. There are some differences in the time
dial markings and, most notably, the seconds bit dial is now recessed with a nickel ring. On this example both dials are replacements
(typically due to decay of the original zinc dials as well as to warping). Note that the time dial will slip a bit in its bezel
and stop the clock by rubbing on the seconds bit. The calendar hand is friction-fit in this model and all subsequent models. This clock is running and striking, and the calendar is advancing. The walnut case is clean, the finials are replacements. The door glass is original with the original lettering. A nice example. AAC sold one last winter for $926. $500-$800.
