Antique American Clocks July 2021
3. $1200
English 8-bell bracket clock, ca. 1843-1897. A third English bracket,
this one also by Hunt & Roskell. The walnut case is 19 inches tall by 12.5 inches wide, making it the smallest of the three
listed here. There are intricate carvings on the front and sides, fencing with four finials around the top, and inset panels
of burled walnut on the front and sides; the finish looks original and is clean and polished. With its engraved
silvered dial, it is a lovely example of late Victorian style. The heavy brass plate, triple fusee bracket movement is
signed “Hunt & Roskell, 156 New Bond Street, London” and is running confidently, but it is not striking or chiming on the quarter
hours as expected; it can be triggered by hand from the back of the movement. I suspect a lever or catch has been displaced
during shipping and transport and can easily be corrected upon removing the movement from the case. The bell hammers need adjustment
as well. As with the two earlier 8-bells, this one has a chime/silence lever on the upper left of the dial and an 8-bell/4-bell
lever on the upper right. The grillwork and screening on the back door is new; there is a key to operate the latch. An
identical example sold in Surrey UK in 2019 for £1150 ($1500). $1200-$2400.
