Antique American Clocks                      July 2021

1.         $2500

English 8-bell bracket clock, ca. 1843-1897.  An intricately carved walnut case, 29.5 inches tall by 14.5 inches wide, with a dark original finish.  I see no missing pieces of trim or carvings. The silvered dial sits behind a thick beveled glass in the silvered bezel, which releases with a push-button on the side.  The dial is signed Hunt & Roskell, London, well regarded jewelers on Bond St who held a highly prestigious Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria.  The clock plays Westminster Chimes on four bells and a tune I don’t recognize on eight bells; there is a lever on the upper right of the dial to select 4 or 8 bells, and a lever on the upper left to silence the chime.  The heavy brass plate, triple fusee bracket movement is unsigned; it is running without problem, chiming on the quarter hours and counting the hours on a large cathedral gong.  The only shortcoming I can find is the lack of a latch on the back door.  $2500-$5000.
