Antique American Clocks July 2021
262. $100
Silas Hoadley 30-hour OG, ca. 1845. Hoadley produced clocks mostly with wood movements, but in his
later years (prior to 1849) he made brass movement clocks. Interestingly, this is one clockmaker who died a rich man. This 26.25-inch one-day OG is notable for its birdseye maple veneer in superb condition. Both glasses are modern replacements,
the lower a frosted and cut-glass tablet. The wooden dial shows some wear but is original and has two small brass grommets that
surround the winding ports and are imprinted “S Hoadley, Plymouth CT USA”. The 1-day brass movement is signed, clean as a whistle,
and running and striking like a champ. There is a darkened label inside with losses and staining. Weights are included
as is a 1925 hand-written letter to the owner giving a short biography of Mr. Hoadley. $100-$200.
