Antique American Clocks July 2021

Seth Thomas “Column Shell Large”, ca. 1874. A 32-inch case veneered in mahogany
and rosewood with barely a chip to be found. I believe the two tablets are old repaints on old glass, well done, and have since
been touched up. The dial glass is newer. I expect the columns and gilding have also been redone, it’s just in too good
of shape otherwise. The metal dial is appropriate and has been overcoated with a yellowing varnish. The hands are correct. The weight-driven 8-day, time-and-strike lyre movement is stamped “Plymouth Hollow”; the well-preserved label is from Thomaston. It is running and striking as expected. Big and beautiful, a fine example of this popular model. $250-$400.
