Antique American Clocks July 2020

Forestville Manufacturing Co. ripple-front cottage, 1842-1849. The movement is signed
Forestville Manufacturing Co., as is the label, with J.C. Brown as proprietor; his signature is also on the old painted dial. The rosewood-veneered case is 15 inches high with ripple around the outer edge of the case and around the door and crossbar. The finish is a bit rough and could stand to be cleaned, if you don’t like a patina. Both glasses are old, the dial glass with
a nice surround, and the tablet, of a palace or public building on a lake, is original with some losses across the middle. I
like the tablet. There is a brass knob on the door and an unusual pendulum hanger. The label is behind plastic. It is running and striking; the time-side click-stop has been replaced. J.C. Brown cottages, and Brown clocks in general, are
still commanding good prices; several sold at Schmitt’s last fall for $300-$600. $350-$600.
