Antique American Clocks July 2020
15. $400
Eli & Samuel Terry pillar & scroll, 1824-1827. Eli provided the factory
and brother Samuel made the clocks; Sam later set out on his own. The mahogany veneer on the 29-inch case is in good shape with
a few repairs on the door; there is a glossy finish overall. The scroll top is original, but the left scroll has been repaired. The ivory escutcheon has been replaced with wood and a small knob; the latch is nonfunctional. I don’t see any issues with the
feet and skirt. Both glasses are modern, the tablet repainted but unsigned. The wooden dial is Terry style, based on the
decoration, and the chapter ring and numerals have been repainted. The hands are old. There is a good but dark label inside. The three brass urn finials are correct and mount on wooden posts. The 30-hour wooden movement will run for a few minutes. Pillar & scroll clocks from these makers are not uncommon and generally sell for $500-$750.
