Antique American Clocks January 2020
18. $250
New Haven “Occidental”, ca. 1900. Yes, another mirrorside, this one by New Haven. As you may gather, our collector had a near-complete collection of mirrorsides, all in top original condition, and this is no exception. This one has the later (1911 vs 1895) glass and pendulum (see Ly New Haven Clocks & Watches, page 311), correct finials, original
side mirrors in outstanding shape, and two original gilt angel statues. The right angel has lost some gilt, but the left angel
is still bright. The painted dial is chipping around the edges and has darkened, but the brass bezel and trim are still bright. The hands are replacements. The painted graining effect on the base has been lost from the left side, but otherwise the walnut
case is clean in an old finish. The New Haven movement is running and striking the hours and half-hours on a nice-sounding cathedral
gong. There is a service label on the back from 1905. New Haven Occidentals are reasonably common, selling from $200-$450;
somewhere around $300 is typical with a wide range of prices dependent on condition. $250-$350.
