Antique American Clocks January 2020
6. $120
Seth Thomas long-drop octagon clock, 1888. The 31-inch oak case would appear
to be the same as used for the early Globe models, but it holds an 8-day, time-only movement (ST No. 41) with a front-mounted pendulum. Note that the pendulum bob is suspended on a wire rather than on a rear-mounted pendulum stick. I would assume that this is
a less expensive option than the Globe, but it is not shown in Ly’s books on Seth Thomas clocks; I cannot find an example in the Antique
Clocks Price Guide either. There is no evidence that the movement is not original to the case (e.g., there are no additional
screw holes). The dial pan is new, as are the hands; the old glass in the bezel was replaced some time ago, the lower glass
is newer as well. The pendulum bob is not Seth Thomas issue. There is a black Seth Thomas label inside (not visible in
the photo as it is behind the framing), and the back is stamped with the date of manufacture (Oct 1888). The clock is running
and keeping time. $120-$150.
