E. Howard & Co. “No. 5 Regulator” (banjo), ca. 1874.  A 29-inch case with an old and dark finish that makes the rosewood graining difficult to see, but it’s there.  The bottom board has been broken out but undamaged; the throat frame, lower door, and box frame are stamped ‘131’.  The dial glass is original (original putty), the tablet period/original, the throat glass may be a modern replacement.  The painted iron dial looks to be original, with signature; the hands are correct.  The E Howard 8-day, time-only movement is running like a champ, driven by a Howard poorly stamped weight and regulated by a Howard pendulum with a damascened bob.  The red wooden weight shield is original, as is the pendulum tie-down.  There is an instruction label inside on the bottom, along with a winding crank.  A much better than average example of this classic.  $500–$800.
