Birge, Mallory & Co. “Patent Brass Eight Day Clock”, 1838-1843.  A 38-inch mahogany veneer case with an old and slightly dull finish.  The carved shell splat has been found on other examples by this firm and is outstanding.  The dial glass is original with a small crack in the lower right corner, the middle glass a likely replacement (newer putty) with a repainted tablet, and the bottom glass is modern, also with a modern painted tablet.  The wooden dial has been repainted, the hands are period and as found on other examples.   The 8-day time-and-strike brass strap movement is very dirty and will only run briefly, and will strike, reluctantly, on the wire gong. It bears the BM&Co stamp.  There are proper Birge 8-day weights and an embossed brass pendulum bob.  There is a dark but complete label inside.  The average AAC sale price for a Birge, Mallory & Co.
