Marshall & Adams Empire shelf clock, 1833-1836. Marshall
& Adams worked in Seneca Falls NY producing several models with either wooden works or brass-strap movements. This
is their top-of-the-line model, a 38-inch mahogany-veneered case with full columns, four glasses, and a heavy brass-strap 8-day, time-and-strike
movement. There is an old finish on the case and the veneer is complete, with figured mahogany columns and carved capitals. The gilded eagle cornice glass looks original but has several vertical cracks; it appears to be stable. The dial glass is period
but held in place with turned and finished wood strips; the middle mirror and bottom mirror are both modern. There is usually
an eglomise image in the middle position. The extensively gilded wooden dial has been overcoated with a varnish and has darkened. There are numerous penciled service notations on the back of the dial, dating back to 1851. The hands are period and appropriate. The movement is unsigned, as is typical, but it is clearly a M&A movement and matches one shown in An Empire in Time on
page 81, with the exception of a solid wheel behind the count wheel on the upper left (An Empire in Time is available in Books,
#705). There are two 8-lb iron weights, and the clock is running and striking a wire gong with a nice tone. There
is a dark, water-stained label inside. $400-$600.
