55. DP-24. $400
Munger & Benedict “flat top”, 1831-1833. Asa and Thaddeus formed a partnership in 1825 but didn’t include Benedict
on the label until 1831; after 1833 Clark Hotchkiss joined the group and it was renamed Munger & Co. The 38.5-inch
case has an old finish and appears to be walnut with flame mahogany panels on the front. There are full-length carved half columns,
a period/original mirror with a wood backboard, and a period glass over the dial with a Munger & Benedict painted dial surround
on the glass in good condition. The putty was replaced some time ago, so the glass may not be original. The iron dial
holds old/original paint and is signed; the hands are period and found on other examples from this duo. The brass 8-day, time-and-strike
movement is unsigned and the dial is mounted to the movement. It is running and striking on the overhead bell as expected, driven
by two appropriate 10-lb cast iron weights. There is a flying eagle pendulum, possibly a modern replacement, wallpaper on the
backboard behind plastic, and a good label in the middle of the backboard. All in all, a fine example. AAC sold three
flat tops in 2025 for an average of $467. $400–$600.
