Birge, Peck & Co. “Extra 8 Day Brass Clock”, 1849-1859. A 32.5-inch case with mahogany veneer on the sides and figured mahogany on the columns and corbels; the finish is dark and old.  The three glasses appear to be original, with a well-preserved middle table of the Crystal Palace in New York, built for an 1853 World Trade Fair; it burned down five years later (note the misspelling of “Chrystal” on the glass).  The lower glass is a Fenn tablet that has been cracked and is now backed by cardboard, seemingly stable.  The contoured metal dial has been varnished and is yellowed, with slight losses; the hands are period/original and correct to these makers.  The strap-brass 8-day, time-and-strike movement is unsigned, as was typical; it is running and striking on a wire gong, driven by two 8-day weights. There is a dark, stained but complete label on the backwall that includes “The Breeze” steam train.  The average AAC sale price for this model by these makers is $208, seven sales.  $100–$225.
