Eli Terry &
Sons column and splat shelf clock, 1823-1831. This firm consisted of Eli Terry and his two oldest sons, Eli Jr and Henry. Eli had eight additional children, including Silas Burham, with his last child being born when he was 71. Whew! This 33-inch
case has carved half-columns and a well-carved splat, along with period carved pineapple finials and paw feet, and slender turned
feet in the back. The mahogany veneer is complete with no obvious repairs and an old finish. Both glasses are old but
may not be original, with newer putty around the repainted tablet of College Street in New Haven. I could not find a corresponding
lithograph, but the view is through the famous New Haven Green towards Yale College. The wooden dial is clean with strong numbering
and gesso and gilding decorations; the hands are period and appropriate. The 30-hour time-and-strike wooden movement is running
and striking and iron bell without problem; there are two period weights and a dark label with some losses, but the makers’ name and
location is evident. A nice example. $200–$400.
