Seth Thomas off-center
pillar & scroll, ca. 1820. An early edition of the pillar & scroll invented by Eli Terry, here made by his
former employee Seth Thomas. It stands 27.5 inches tall without the brass urn finials; the finish is clean and polished,
the mahogany veneer without damage or obvious repair. The scroll top, feet, and skirt look old, and with no repairs to the scroll
tips. Both glasses are twentieth century replacements, with a proper tablet by Tom Moberg. The brass urn finials are the
proper Seth Thomas style on steel posts. There is a working door lock and ivory escutcheon. The wooden dial is the
proper ST type with a decoration below the mainstem, including a gesso and gilded American shield, and minute markers on the quarter
hours. The numbering has been strengthened and there is some fading overall; note the colorful spandrels. The steel hands
are of the proper style. The 4-wheel wood-strap movement is correct and will run but needs adjustment to the crutch. It
strikes on an iron bell. There are period cast iron weights compounded on four wooden pulleys and a clean label on the
backboard. AAC has sold four similar examples in the last five years for an average of $2059. $1200-$2500.
