Ansonia Clock Co. “Sunwatch”, ca. 1924. About the
size of a credit card, the brass case flips open to reveal a compass (working) and a sundial with an arm that lifts up to provide
the needed shadow for determining the time. There is a booklet that tells you how to determine the time at your latitude and
time of year, with a Table of Latitudes for major cities on the inside cover. Of course, if you’re in one of those cities you
probably don’t need a sundial to learn the time, but you get the idea. Too complicated for me, but boy scouts in 1925 could
manage it. The cardboard case is in good shape, although one flap has torn off (but is still present). You can find these
on eBay, selling for from $45 to $500 (that’s just crazy). $50–$100.
