211. $400
Waterbury Clock Co. “Quebec”, ca. 1881. A second in the “Canada series” (I made that up), a 42-inch walnut case with an
old finish and burl walnut appliques on the base and across the top, below the crest. The crest differs slightly from the catalog
illustration (Ly, Waterbury Clocks & Watches, page 197), but matches the one on a clock AAC sold in 2023, as well as the one on
the only example on LiveAuctioneers. The very bottom piece of trim looks like a replacement from the front but looks original
from the back. The door glass is period/original, with the proper silver stencil. The dial is very old paper, probably
original, with wear; it is signed and bears the Waterbury logo. The hands are period and as shown in the catalog illustration. The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is signed and running, striking on a cathedral gong. The pendulum is Waterbury issue and
there is a Waterbury beat scale at the bottom. The partial label on the back is in Spanish, suggesting that this clock was exported
to South or Central America (where they needed to know the time just like here). The finish on this clock suggests that it has
been cleaned, but it remains one of Waterbury’s prettiest clocks. The one AAC sold in 2023 went for $500; the one that sold at
Redland’s in California in 2021 went for $550. $400–$600.
