George Hatch N Attleboro banjo, ca. 1840–1870. Hatch worked northeast of Providence RI and made banjo clocks in several styles, including square bottom, rounded sides as here, and round bottoms.  In contrast to his contemporary, Edward Howard, Hatch favored a black background on his throat and box glasses (Howard used the maroon color adopted by Antique American Clocks).  Hatch also used a detachable, hanging pendulum bob, as found here.  He did not sign his dials, but many were signed by a major retailer, WHC Riggs of Philadelphia.  Like Howard, the 29-inch cases are hardwood (walnut or cherry) grain-painted to look like rosewood.  The three glasses here are period/original and retain the original paint, with some cracking and lifting.  The dial holds old paint with light staining and chipping, and the moon hands are proper.  The 8-day, time-only movement is unsigned, polished, and running, with a proper and likely original pendulum stick and bob.  The weight is lead and should be iron, the pulley wheel is incorrect, and the weight shield is painted tin and should be wood.  No label.  $200–$400.
