J Bigelow & Co. New England mirror clock, ca. 1830. John Bigelow was a silversmith and retailer in Boston from about 1824 to the early 1830’s, when his brothers joined him and they went by the name Bigelow Bros. & Co.  Later they became Bigelow, Kennard & Co., going out of business in 1972.  As this clock was not signed, we do not know who made it.  The 30-inch case uses rabbet joints and has mahogany veneer on the sides and front, with gesso-covered half-columns and very old paint (I think any gilding on the columns has been overpainted), with considerable chipping and wear.  There are four brass rosettes on the corner blocks.  The mirror is modern, as is the dial glass, with a nicely painted dial surround.  The 8-inch iron dial holds the original paint and signature of the retailer, with age-appropriate soiling, craquelure, and chipping.  The hands are appropriate and old.  The unsigned banjo-style 8-day, time-only movement is running, driven by an 8-lb lead weight and a period/original metal rod pendulum.  No label.  $400–$800.
