LF & W Carter “Carter Calendar Clock”, 1862-1868. This
is a slightly larger version of this model, 30.5 inches long; the standard version is 26 inches. The label also differs from
the standard version, with William W Carter’s middle initial omitted. The rosewood case is very dark with a thick patina. Both glasses are old and possibly original; both dials are painted and show some wear but are in good condition, with little or no
chipping. All five hands are correct. The 8-day spring-driven brass, time-only movement is as found in other examples
and was made by Elias Burwell, using B.B. Lewis’ patent calendar mechanism, as noted on the interior label. The clock is running
and the weekday calendar hand is advancing, but I cannot get the drop lever to engage the lower calendar lift arm, and some adjustment
will be needed. As noted, a label inside and interesting newspaper backing on the back from 1880. An uncommon model; AACsold a similar example in 2021 for $727. $400–$700.
