150.           $25

Chauncey Goodrich 8-day ironfront, ca. 1853.  Chauncey worked with many clockmakers in Connecticut including JC Brown; his last partnership, with Samuel Smith, ended in 1852 and he worked on his own for a few years before entering public service, eventually becoming a US Senator from Connecticut.  Unfortunately, personal problems beset him, he attempted suicide in 1888, and he died penniless in an alms house after losing his wealth in the stock market crash of 1893.  The ironfront is 14.5 inches tall with worn and faded gilding and decorations; the back of the ironfront is stamped ‘41’, the foundry model number.  No foundry name.  Both glasses are old, the painted dial is faded but bears the makers name and location.  The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is unmarked; it is running and striking on a wire gong. There is no label, so all we have to go on is the dial signature.  $25–$100.
