Seth Thomas column & cornice special order? ca. 1862. This clock is 37.5 inches tall, with a modified base that may or may not be original to the Seth Thomas factory; Ly does not show
any similar models in his two books on Seth Thomas clocks, and I don’t recall seeing a similar example. It is possible that
a ST column clock was modified to suit the buyer, in this case, apparently J.R. Samson. There is no veneer on this clock, I
assume it was removed and the clock refinished well in the past. All three glasses are period, with a nicely preserved tablet
on the middle glass; a name and date are scratched into the backside of the glass. This middle glass has two horizontal cracks
that have been glued. The wooden dial is lightly soiled and has metal grommets at the winding holes, the hands are ST issue. The 8-day, time-and-strike brass, weight-driven movement is die-stamped S. Thomas Plymouth Conn, consistent with the sideways label
on the backboard; however, that part of the backboard is not original to the clock and was taken from another clock – note the holes
and shadow where a wire gong base would have been mounted. This raises the possibility that the movement is also a replacement. Nonetheless, it is running and striking, driven by two 8-day weights painted white. An interesting clock, even if it is a bench-made
creation. I will part out this clock if desired. $50–$200.
