Birge, Mallory & Co. Patent Brass Eight
Day Clock, 1838-1843. A beautifully refinished 36-inch mahogany case with a jaw-dropping carved shell splat, a clean and bright
wooden dial with gesso and gilding, and a wonderfully repainted middle tablet. There are full columns in figured mahogany on
each side and an old mirror in the bottom door. The dial glass and middle glass are both original. The hands are likely
original; the pull-up mirror that should be behind the dial is missing, as is the cardboard envelope holder, but you can easily restore
that if you like. The 8-day time-and-strike, strap-brass movement is signed BM&Co; it is running effortlessly but the strike
chain is hung up. It strikes on a wire gong with a square base. There are two proper weights, and old pendulum bob,
and a good label inside. This is a centerpiece clock for your room. BM&Co clocks like this have been selling for $200
and up of late. $200–$300.
