Asa Munger empire flat-top (ironing board) shelf clock, 1818-1825.  A third example of this model, this one fully refinished with a clean, modern look.  The 38.5-inch case is refinished walnut (or butternut?) with burl inset across the top, two wooden rosettes, and carved half-columns on each side of the door.  The dial glass is period with a repainted surround; the blue mirror is modern.  The metal dial holds the original paint with considerable touch-up; the finely carved barbed hands and wavy seconds bit are all original.  The 8-day, time-only movement is unsigned and running, driven by a 9-lb tall case weight that approximates the cylindrical weight that should be there; it is suspended on one Munger pewter pulley at the top, and a brass replacement pulley at the weight.  The flying eagle pendulum appears to be original and there is good wallpaper inside, with a card label in good condition.  Good looking if you can bear the blue mirror (which could be replaced; Munger flat tops always had a mirror in this position).  $450–$600.
