51.             $10

Hiram Welton 30-hour miniature OG, 1840-1842. Welton took over Eli Terry Jr’s business in 1840 and soon added his brother Heman but only lasted two years.  Here he was making early weight-driven brass movements and building miniature OGs with weight-driven alarms.  The 22.5-inch case has mahogany veneer with some chips and a dull finish.  The dial glass is missing, the lower glass is period, possibly original, and has been rebacked. There is no dial, but there are proper period hands.  The 30-hour time-and-strike, weight-driven movement is unsigned and incorporates a weight-driven alarm.  It is running and striking reluctantly.  The alarm was untested.  There is a good label on the backboard.  $10–$100.
