E.C. Brewster & Co. 30-hour shelf clock,
1840-1843. His shop manager was Shaylor Ives, one of the six Ives brothers; Shaylor had patents for brass springs and was an
early developer of brass, spring-driven clocks. The 23.5-inch case is veneered in mahogany with some evident chips and repairs. The dial glass is original; the mirror and last-century replacement. The contoured metal dial has been cleaned and touched up;
the hands are period. The 30-hour time-and-strike movement is unsigned; it is mounted on Kirk’s backplate with the springs enclosed
in cast iron cups (an earlier invention of Charles Kirk, the previous shop manager for Brewster). It is running and striking;
there is a dark but complete label inside. $50–$150.
