Wadsworths & Turners column & splat
shelf clock, 1829-1831. This short-lived firm, and their previous firm with Lounsbury, made only pillar & scroll clocks,
if you judge from the 32 clocks that have sold on LiveAuctioneers. Here is the exception to that rule – a column and splat clock. A rare bird from these guys based in Litchfield, CT, a town not far from Bristol and Waterbury. The 30-inch case has bronzed
half-columns and a splat that I think are repainted, as they show no wear. I believe the feet (front and back) are modern reproductions. The mahogany veneer is good with one repair on the right side of the dial glass; the dial glass is period but the putty has been replaced,
and the lower glass is modern with an attractive, unsigned tablet. The wood dial is clean but faded, the hands are period and
proper. The 30-hour wooden movement will not run or strike; there are two period weights, an old brass bob, and a good label
inside. $150–$300.
