Erastus Hodges 30-hour shelf clock, ca. 1830.  Hodges worked with Norris North from 1828 and took over the business in 1831.  Most of his clocks are narrow-case pillar & scrolls; here he is using a federal-style case with half-columns on each side.  The case is 22.5-inches tall and 11.5-inches wide with a very old finish, probably original.  It is thick with patina and very dark.  The columns do not appear to have been painted, gilded, or stenciled.  Both glasses are original, with an original tablet in acceptable condition.  The wooden dial is reasonably clean and likely original; the hour hand is likely original, the minute hand an acceptable replacement.  The 30-hour wooden ‘Torrington’ east-west movement is clean and has had some repairs and replacements; it will run briefly and the strike is slow.  There are two period weights and a good label inside.   This is an uncommon model (there are no matches on LiveAuctioneers or the Antique Clocks Identification and Price Guide) from an uncommon maker, in unretouched condition.  $250–$500.
