284. $500
Biedermeier spring-driven grand sonnerie, ca.
1840. A 40-inch case with six glasses. The door glasses are modern, the four side glasses may be older. The pine
case is veneered with a light wood, possibly walnut. The 8-inch convex porcelain dial has some repairs at the right winding
arbor, sitting in a guilloche bezel. The hands are period and likely original. The grand sonnerie movement is unmarked
and is spring-driven, striking the quarter-hours and repeating the hour as well. Both strikes are working, but the hour strike
hammer is missing its target wire gong. It will tick briefly, but you will need patience to get this clock running; I don’t
know if it is 8-day or longer. The pendulum stick is likely original and the brass bob is filled and heavy. I believe
it is unusual to find a fully spring-driven grand sonnerie. $500–$1000.
