Swiss Neuchatel quarter-striking shelf clock
with bracket, ca. 1800. A very early 22-inch bracket clock in an ebonized wood case with gilded decorations and trim. There is a matching bracket to mount the clock on a wall (hence, bracket clock). The dial is old convex glass, held in place
with newer putty, as is the lower flat glass, also old. The convex porcelain dial has no chips or significant cracks; the cast
iron hands are heavy and likely original. The 8-day, sonnerie movement is unmarked; it is running and striking on two wire gongs
(bim-bam) counting the quarter hours. This clock likely started out as a silk thread suspension and was converted to a suspension
spring. There is a bell on top that I cannot get to strike; there is a pull cord that winds it up, but it doesn’t strike. The clock counts the hours on one of the wire gongs. It is slightly out of plumb. Key included, no label. $500-$1000.
