Ashton Valve Co. “No. 63”, ca. 1913. This clock closely
resembles the Seth Thomas Chronometer Lever No. 5011 and contains a Seth Thomas 8-day, double-wind movement; “S.T. 1870” is also shown
at the bottom of the dial. Ashton bought lever-spring movements from ST, Chelsea, and Howard and placed them in cases of their
own design. The brass case is 12.25 inches in diameter with a 9-inch brass dial inscribed “The Ashton Valve Co., Boston Mass”
behind a thick glass; the bezel releases with a push-button and is on a heavy-duty hinge. The case and dial are clean and polished,
and the hands are correct. The ST 8-day, double-wind movement is running without issue. It sits in a home-made oak stand,
15.5 inches tall. AAC sold a smaller nickel ST version in 2022 for $500; Schmitt Horan sold a Seth Thomas example in 2021 for
$475. $400–$500.
Thanks to Bill Sohne for straightening me out on the Ashton Valve Co.!
