Seth Thomas “Violin” REPRODUCTION, ca. 1980. The original ST Violin was a special-order model and is extremely rare; it was produced in 1885. A few skilled craftsmen made
reproductions of this model in the last century, and Tran Duy Ly illustrates some of these examples on pages 746-751 of Seth Thomas
Clocks & Movements, Vol 2. This example does not match any of those shown, and the maker did not sign his work, so we do
not know who made it. The walnut case is 29.5 inches tall with a clean finish; the door glass is a modern reproduction. Note that this example has feet, as did the originals; some reproductions do not. The dial is paper, signed, with faint foxing;
the hands are Seth Thomas issue. The 8-day, time-and-strike, lyre-shaped movement is die-stamped Seth Thomas, Plymouth Conn
and is running and striking without problem. It strikes on a wire gong on a Seth Thomas base; most reproductions, and the originals,
struck on a bell. The pendulum is Seth Thomas, and there is a reproduction white Seth Thomas label inside on the bottom. This is a beautiful example, you can see why reproducing this model was so popular. AAC sold reproduction by EN Harvell in 2020
for $926. $500–$1000.
