Forestville Manufacturing Co. four-post round
gothic (onion top), 1842-1849. A second example of this popular model, this one by J.C. Brown. The 19.5-inch case is veneered
in rosewood with a dry finish in need of rejuvenation. There are scattered chips and missing pieces, most noticeably at the
top left corner of the door. Both glasses are period, the dial glass original with the original putty, the tablet a well-preserved
Fenn design with light wear. The contoured dial has numerous scrapes and some soiling; there is a heavily eroded JC Brown signature
below the mainstem. The hands are proper, but the minute hand is a replacement. The 8-day, time-and-strike fusee movement
is not strung and so could not be tested. The signed movement is not mounted properly on the fusee bracket but you can fix that
when you install the cords (the movement needs to sit on top of the cast iron bracket). There is a good label inside. This one needs a bit of TLC. $250–$500.
