EN Welch Co. ripple-front round gothic, ca. 1860. Elisha Welch took over the bankrupt JC Brown business in 1855 and sold remaining stock, including ripple-front gothic clocks as found here.  The clean and polished case is 19 inches tall with two original glasses (original putty around dial glass) and a well-preserved tablet of the President’s House viewed from the Potomac River.  The painted dial is original in good condition, the hands proper and likely original.  The 8-day, time-and-strike brass movement is signed E N Welch and is running and striking without issue. There is a blue-green label inside noting the “Late J. C. Brown” manufactory (Brown was not dead, just bankrupt).  This example is as nice as any one I have seen.  AAC sold one in July of 2023 for $452.  $400–$600.
